US Clocks Fall Back on November 1: What Changes for Iran?

US Clocks Fall Back on November 1: What Changes for Iran?
The US clock change arrives early Sunday. For families and colleagues coordinating with Iran, the practical consequence is an extra hour of separation, not a change to Tehran's clocks.

A familiar weekly call can suddenly land an hour later, even when nobody has changed the appointment. That is the small trap in this weekend's US clock change for families, students and colleagues coordinating across borders.

Most of the United States returns to standard time on Sunday, November 1, 2026. At 2 a.m. local time, clocks move back to 1 a.m. The National Institute of Standards and Technology confirms the date in its 2026 guidance; City News Service's October 31 report gives the same instruction for Southern California.

For readers of AsiaNews Iran, the important detail is that Iran does not change its clocks. Tehran stays at UTC+03:30, so its time difference with US cities that observe daylight saving grows by one hour.

What happens during the repeated hour?

The transition follows each location's clock, not a single simultaneous nationwide moment. New York changes before Los Angeles. In an affected city, the hour from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. happens twice: once in daylight time and again in standard time.

That matters if an overnight appointment, shift or journey is listed simply as 1:30 a.m. Confirm which occurrence the organizer means. An explicit date, city and time-zone offset are clearer than an isolated clock reading.

The change also puts sunrise and sunset an hour earlier on the clock. It does not create extra daylight; it changes how daylight lines up with the hours used for work, school and travel.

The new Tehran–US time differences

The IANA time-zone database records Tehran's fixed UTC+03:30 offset under the current rules. Timeanddate's 2026 Tehran calendar independently shows no clock change this year.

Here is what a 9 a.m. appointment in each US city on Monday, November 2 means in Tehran. All times below refer to that same date and use the 24-hour clock.

US city Tehran is ahead by 09:00 there is this time in Tehran
New York 8 hours 30 minutes 17:30
Chicago 9 hours 30 minutes 18:30
Denver 10 hours 30 minutes 19:30
Los Angeles 11 hours 30 minutes 20:30

For example, 9 a.m. in New York corresponds to 4:30 p.m. in Tehran on October 31, but 5:30 p.m. on November 2. This assumes the appointment remains fixed to New York's local time. An event fixed to UTC, or to Tehran time, behaves differently.

Not every US clock moves

A country-wide reminder is not enough for every destination. NIST identifies these important exceptions:

  • Hawaii stays on standard time throughout the year.
  • Most of Arizona does not observe daylight saving; the Navajo Nation does.
  • Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa also do not observe it.

Use the actual destination city when arranging a call or checking a booking. Do not apply the Denver row to every location commonly described as being in Mountain Time.

A three-step check before Monday

  1. Open the next calendar occurrence. Check its date, named time zone and the time shown for both participants, rather than relying on last week's conversion.
  2. Check the device's settings. Keep the operating system updated and confirm the correct location or time zone. NIST explains that computers apply local clock-change rules; receiving an accurate UTC time signal alone is not enough.
  3. Confirm anything time-critical. For a flight, examination, interview or overnight shift, use the provider's current itinerary or invitation and resolve any ambiguous time with the organizer.

Proposals are not the clock rule

Debate about permanent daylight saving has not removed the November 1 change in the current official guidance. The US Department of Transportation explains that states can exempt themselves from daylight saving, but cannot independently choose permanent daylight saving time.

Before sharing a claim that the change has been canceled, check its date and the official rule it cites. Our guide to checking online news explains that distinction. For a different part of seasonal planning, our US winter-outlook report separates a broad forecast from local conditions.

The simplest takeaway for a Tehran-based reader is this: leave Iran's clock alone, but recheck the next US appointment. Which time-zone mix-up would you most like a practical guide to solve? Share an example without posting private booking or account details.
