Cause of Death: Unknown: Represents Iranian Cinema at the 2026 Oscars
Iran’s nine-member Oscar selection committee has unanimously chosen Ali Zarnegar’s Cause of Death: Unknown as the country’s official entry for the 2026 Academy Awards, following a rigorous review of five shortlisted films.

According to the report of Mansour Jahani, an independent and international cinema journalist, the film “Cause of Death: Unknownwas” nominated by a majority votes as the representative of Iranian cinema at the 2026 Oscars, out of the 5 finalists.

After reviewing the selected works, the selection committee unanimously deemed the film “Cause of Death: Unknownwas” directed by Ali Zarnegar worthy of participating in this global competition and introduced it as the official representative of Iranian cinema to the Oscar Academy in 2026.

Pantea Panahiha (actress), Azadeh Mousavi (documentary filmmaker), Abolhassan Davoodi (director), Farhad Tohidi (screenwriter), Hooman Behmanesh (director of photography), Mohammad Reza Delpak (sound designer and member of the Academy of Oscars), Mostafa Kiaei (director), Ali Dehkordi (actor) and Mohammad Reza Tashakori (Secretary of the Committee and Deputy International and International Distributor) the nine-member committee formed to select the Iranian cinema representative to attend the 2026 Oscars.
